USRowing Magazine, Summer 2001, Vol. 33, No. 3, Page 34. In an article entitled "Masters Nationals: Indianapolis hosted this year's annual celebration of the competitive spirit that thrives in masters rowing," Sarah Schad gives special mention to Rob Slocum. " Although he enjoys the teamwork that crew brings, Rob Slocum mostly races in a single. Slocum began rowing when he was a freshman in college at Princeton University. After one year, he quit, but got back on the water July 5, 1997, at Norwalk. He and his teammates are now best friends. Slocum explained that there are basically two reasons why so many people come to masters' regattas. "You come to see all of your best friends and to win." Slocum is what one would call a regular master rower. He competes in all of the top master events and as soon as sprint-racing season finishes, he begins training for the head race season. Slocum believes that rowing is, for now al least, a structure in his life. He has competed in many different sports through the years but he is stuck on rowing. Slocum said, "The great thing about crew and one reason I think I will stick with it is that, to win, one needs technique along with aerobic strength and there are not many sports out there like that." Slocum has mastered the art of putting technique and aerobic capacity together in the single. He won the gold medal in the men's D (ages 50-54) single." |
